Tips to make your long-distance relationship work
Couples in a long-distance relationship have been facing a tough time. The pandemic and subsequent lockdown has forced them to limit their interactions online. Commuting both in the city and in the state has been difficult, though many areas are now easing up on restrictions. The experience has been both exhausting and frustrating for many leading to break-ups.
Navigating a long-distance relationship in the midst of a pandemic
Making a long-distance relationship work is hard in normal circumstances. The pandemic has only led to couples re-evaluating such romances leading to many breaking up. For those looking to make long-distance dating work for them, here are a few tips that can help says psychiatrist Parul Tank.
- Avoid bringing up unresolved issues from the past
Considering meeting one and another may be hard during this time. It makes sense to avoid bringing up the past or arguing about unresolved issues. It’s better to keep these topics for another time.
- Don’t rush to make a commitment
Make sure that your reasons for getting into a commitment with your partner are right. Don’t rush into one because you are feeling lonely or depressed, and are longing for company. At the same time, don’t sit on the fence for too long. You have to decide on the course of this long-distance relationship. However, only do that if you really want to at this point of time.
- Have face-to-face conversations
Even if it’s not possible to meet in person, ensure you have face-to-face conversations with your partner using video calls. This is to avoid any misunderstandings that can happen via texts or emails.
- If possible try and meet your partner
For any relationship to survive, there has to be a connection. Both individuals have to set aside time to interact with each other on a daily basis. They should ideally try and meet at least once or twice a month. The pandemic unfortunately, may have altered the travel plans of many couples. However, as things open up, and travel restrictions are lifted, you can try to meet your partner following all safety measures.
Long-distance relationships need a lot of TLC and patience. As a couple, you can survive the distance and the pandemic if both are equally committed to making things work.
