Impact of the pandemic on our social skills

Assessing impact of the pandemic on our social skills

The current situation has forced many of us to rely on technology to connect with people. Some even fear the negative impact of the pandemic on our social skills. In the absence of face-to-face conversations, and as more interactions happen via calls, texts and video calls, what does the future hold for social interactions? Dr Kedar Tilwe, consultant psychiatrist, Fortis Hospital Mulund & Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi throws some light on the topic.

The impact of the pandemic on our social skills will be…

While many may fear the worst, Dr Kedar feels there’s no reason to concern ourselves. He shares, “The pandemic and the necessary intervention protocols in place should not hamper our emotional connect. With the easy accessibility to video calls and social media platforms, reaching out to people you care about is a matter of choice! So, understanding the new norms and etiquettes of online interaction may be the new ‘social skills’ that we need to become aware of.”

He also goes on to stress that while the way we interact may have changed, that will not necessarily hamper our social skills. The medium of communication may have changed, however, it’s just a platform at the end of theĀ  day. What people need to ensure is that they do not self isolate to such an extent that they completely cut off from the outside world. It’s important to have a fixed routine through the day, and a fixed time set aside so you can spend quality time with loved ones.

Ways to brush up on your social skills online

Learn to listen and avoid making the conversation only about yourself. To carry on a conversation, ask open-ended questions, and be patient and hear the other person out. Seek support online by becoming part of a group that encourages you to improve your social skills. Pay attention and work on your body language.
